Grand Opening of Gallery 842

n168324500006_64581Huntington, WV—The Huntington Art Collective, a group in affiliation with Create Huntington, will be holding an inaugural art exhibition and reception to celebrate the grand opening of Gallery 842, a community art project spawned from the weekly Chat ‘N Chew sessions.

The exhibition, juried and curated by local artists Seth Cyfers and John Farley, and organized by a volunteer group of like-minded, progressive citizens, will feature a wide variety of artwork from across the Tri-state area.

The concept was shepherded by Lynn Clercx, a Realtor and Huntington resident, and made possible through the hard work of a team of over a dozen people. Farley, who serves as the director for the Birke Art Gallery, noted that Gallery 842 is an illustration of the talent in this area.
“Visitors to Gallery 842 will be presented with a diverse range of fine art in many media–both two and three-dimensional,” Farley said. “This exhibition is representative of the quality and breadth of work being produced by artists in the region.”

Thomas McChesney, a Create Huntington volunteer echoed Farley’s sentiments.
“Gallery 842 is a prime example of what can be accomplished when engaged citizens from the community and faculty, students and staff from Marshall work together,” McChesney, Director of Marketing and Business Development for Huddleston Bolen, LLP, said. “In just a few months, they’ve taken an idea from concept to reality and will transform an empty store into a vibrant gallery,” McChesney said.

McChesney added, “It is going to be a great venue for artists, one that will help local artists and artisans see that there is a welcoming, local art scene. It is also going to be a cool venue for the community that, I believe, will draw people to downtown Huntington. More than all of this though, I believe they have demonstrated that dedicated citizens can accomplish a great deal if they are freed to be creative and empowered to make a difference. By doing this, they may very well be another step in a process that is transforming our City.”

Farley and Cyfers are both Marshall University graduates.
“As graduates of the Department of Art and Design at Marshall University both Farley and Cyfers are creative, civic-minded and collaborative,” Byron Clercx, chair of the MU’s Department of Art and Design. “They are part of a growing number of people invested in making Huntington a better place to live, work and play. The HAC community gallery adds an exciting new facet to the fine and performing arts culture in Huntington; and, like we have observed in other forward-thinking communities, the arts can play a vital role in the cultural/economic revitalization of downtown Huntington by stimulating pedestrian activity, encouraging civic and private investment and by rebranding the city in a positive light to its residents, guests and elected officials.”

The opening reception will take place on the evening of April 24, 2009 from 7 pm to midnight. There will not be a cover charge but donations (to subsidize ongoing operating expenses) will be graciously accepted. Refreshments will be provided.

Gallery 842 is located at 842 4th Avenue, Huntington, WV (formerly Bliss Boutique). Gallery 842 will be open Thursday-Saturday from 4 pm – 9 pm, and Sunday from noon-4 pm.

Several local establishments are sponsoring this initiative by donating funds, including Mac-Reedo’s Bar & Grill, Colonial Lanes Bowling Alley, Hank’s Wall-Street Tavern & Piano-Bar, Giovanni’s Pizzeria, Stonewall and Musicplex Recording Studio.

Many area businesses are graciously offering discounts to patrons who visit Gallery 842 and get a bracelet. Venues include: Rebels & Redcoats Tap Room, Hank’s Wall-Street Tavern & Piano-Bar, St. Mark’s, Shaker’s Bar & Grill, V-Club, and Mac-Reedo’s Bar & Grill.

The space for Gallery 842 has been donated by Liza Caldwell of Huntington.

I ended up being held up later than I expected Friday night and was not able to attend the opening reception for Gallary 842. I was so upset! Who will be "working" the gallary during its open hours? What source is funding the gallary -- staff, utilities, etc.?
  • Michael I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. I'm really not familiar with the Huntington Art Center. This site is also not really a product of "Create Huntington" as I built it without having met the Create Huntington people. It is just a site to highlight positive things in Huntington.

Thus, when you achieve your Art Center goals I'll be just as excited about it and will discuss it here as well; there is plenty of room in Huntington for more than one initiative to enhance the arts.

    Good luck with your endeavor!

  • Hello Fellow Supporters of the Huntington Art Center and members of the Create Huntington Group.

    --- OPEN LETTER ----

Today I found out in the Herald Dispatch that an Art Gallery called the 842 Gallery has opened in downtown Huntington. I was excited to hear the news but disappointed to find out that the project was part of the Create Huntington group. The same group that I have been involved with for the past year and promoting and trying to build a gallery in downtown Huntington.

I have supported the Create Huntington group for almost a year and have attended a number of meeting discussing my vision for a downtown gallery. I have promoted the Create Huntington Group through my web sites and through my involvement in the art community and art organization in Huntington.

For the past year I have worked hard to promote Huntington and the Art Community as a whole. As a leader in two local art clubs I am devoted to promoting and helping local artist. My recent work on a prospectus for a large gallery in Huntington was a result of a year of hard work and is currently in review by an organization that may help fund the Huntington Art Center. Funding that I hope will not require support of local bars to exist.

I have said from the beginning that I support any effort for a gallery to be built in Huntington and that in no way is my project or ideas self serving.

However, I must say I am a but hurt and disappointed in the Create Huntington group and some of the members who I trusted that did not feel it was necessary to involve me or the need to contact me about there project so that we would not be duplicating efforts. One of the members of the Create Huntington group even went as far as agreeing to set on the board of directors of the Huntington Art Center and help promote and make the gallery and project a success. The same people are now taking full credit for the concept in the media of creating a downtown gallery. The same people who agreed to help me build a gallery and then create the same project on there own without a single effort to notify me.

As quoted above "concept was shepherded by Lynn Clercx" - It would not have been difficult to come up with the concept considering that you was a member of the same group that I was and was offered the entire project in detail in a hand out.

This lack of respect and lack of cohesion in the group has made me now consider any future involvement in the Create Huntington group. I will continue my efforts to build the Huntington Art Center and complete my vision for Huntington but no longer see value and trust in the Create Huntington Group.

Thank you all who supported my project and I do wish the best for the 842 Gallery as it is good to see that part of my vision has become a reality after all.

What GREAT news! I am so glad to have this website to read. Instead of depressing financial news I can read how Huntington is becoming a better plan to live and visit. I will plan on attending the opening reception. How exciting! Maybe I'll buy some artwork!
