And Now a Word on Sports
As I was reading Why Huntington this morning it struck me that there are several stories about the arts and sciences (all very good things!) but nothing about college sports. Let’s take care of that. Huntingtonians love sports. As everyone knows, we have a long, wonderful and sad history with college sports. That history is part of what makes Huntington … Huntington; and part of what makes it great.
I remember growing up in the 70′s and going to the Veteran’s Memorial Field House to watch Marshall basketball teams. The place was crazy! I remember going to the Henderson Center when I was in college to watch Marshall basketball teams: Skip Henderson, Coach Huckabee in his tux… . A packed Henderson Center is something to see (well, hear actually).
Those days are here again. This Marshall Basketball team is fun to watch. They have a real chance to make a run in the conference and to break into post-season play for the first time in decades.
For sports fans, it’s fun basketball. Heck, Whiteside is worth the price of admission alone. Even if you’re not crazy about basketball, it’s an entertaining evening of cheering and people-watching. And if you’re a relative newcomer to the area, it’s a slice of Huntington that you really shouldn’t miss. Do yourself a favor, come out to the upcoming games, bring your kids. You’ll be talking about it for years. Here’s a list of a few upcoming home games:
Sat., Jan 23 MU v. University of Alabama Birmingham
Wed., Jan 27 MU v. Memphis
Sat., Feb 6 MU v. East Carolina
