Huntington Art Gawk

If you’ve walked downtown town at all over the past two weeks you may have noticed various works of art on display in many of the storefronts – particularly on 3rd and 4th ave and 9th street. All of this art has been setup as part of the ArtGawk – a great initiative to beautify our downtown and to showcase some of the great artists in the area. The work was coordinated by the same folks who put together gallery 842 – a free art gallery at 842 4th ave.

Sometimes the simplest pleasures can be the finest and the most overlooked. Hiking is one of those things that few people seem to do but that is greatly enjoyed by those who do. It is also an activity that has a perfect home in and around Huntington. It should come as no surprise to anyone who lives or who has visited that there are some great trials in the area. However, if you don’t know where they are, or which trails are right for your skill/fitness …

Math Machine Unveiled at Marshall University

“There is a wonderful quote from Dr. Vannevar Bush (the first to build such a machine at M.I.T.), ‘Experience is necessary, of course, in order to use the device effectively. This is actually one of the most attractive aspects of the machine; one acquires an entirely new appreciation of the innate nature of a differential equation as that experience is gained,’ ” Lawrence said

Harveytown Park

Recently, while finishing up a mountain biking ride I discovered the small neighborhood of Harveytown. Harveytown is nestled on the south-western side of Huntington between the hills of the South Side and I-64. Becuase Harveytown sits in a small valley it is immune to the noise normally associated with living near a freeway. As I peddled around what I can only descri be as a rural community stuck within an urban landscape I discovered a couple gems including the Radio Museum and a great little park; The …

Ritter in the Spring

All around us in the grassy fields there were groups playing soccer, football, and ultimate frisbee. Plus, the walking paths were crowded with walkers and their dogs enjoying the wonderful spring weather that is a hallmark of the region.

Trails Abound

Last summer some friends of mine convinced me to give Mountain Biking a try. I hadn’t really rode a bike much since I was about 16 so I was pretty darn nervous that first day on the trails. Fortunately for me there are a wide variety of trails within a short distance of downtown Huntington so I didn’t have to jump on a difficult “black diamond” rated trail as an initiation.

Waking with the River

I’ve lived in a few different cities that boast a river but I’ve never been so lucky as to live right along the shores. However, thanks to the affordable nature of real estate in Huntington I am truly lucky to be able to enjoy not only the amenities city living has to offer but I also get to enjoy a more personal relationship with the natural beauty that fills this region.
