Word Up Creative Writing Poetry & Essay Contest

The Word Up creative writing workshop is hosting a creative writing poetry and essay contest in Huntington with prizes available in three age categories; Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, and Adult.

Poetry Contest

Submissions must be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 3 pages (double spaced with a minimum font size of 12pt) and no more than 3 pieces of poetry can be entered.

Essay

Submissions must be a minimum of 2 pages and a maximum of 10 double spaced pages with a font size between 10 and 12. Your essay must be about the challenges you see facing your home, community, and nation. Writers are encouraged to include the effect their community leaders are having in their life and community.

Additional Info

Deadline for submission will be September 1, 2009. All snail mail submissions must be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelop if you would like your work returned. You can also submit via email.

The winners will be announced at the V.O.I.C.E. writers conference on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at the Pullman Plaza Hotel.

  • This is an ongoing 6 week workshop in which you can start anytime. The workshop is primarily on Tuesday 11am-1pm. Once have completed the course the group still will meet and discuss publishing resources and critique works in progress. Saturdays @ 7pm are basically a review and an open forum to recite or read poetry openly. We have a positive environment of artist so feel free to sign up on the website under the "Word Up" tab or just come to the classes at 1650 8th Avenue (Classroom), Huntington, WV 25703. Thank you for your inquiry! The workshop is available online incase you can't make it to class. However, class participation is strongly advised to get a more social interaction with other artist.

    My question is about the workshop. Is this a weekly event, do you attend both days, has it already begun or can you start anytime, do you go to one or is it ongoing? I have a 14 year old who likes to write and would be interested but I am just unsure of these things.
